Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service (MLK Day) is the only federal holiday that Congress also designates as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” A federal holiday that began as a commemoration of Dr. King’s birthday, it is now a day dedicated to encouraging and empowering Americans to participate in community service. Everyone can serve their community in some way, whether it be big or small. Not only are you helping others but you will find that it is very rewarding to serve. Dr. King’s famous “I have a dream” speech embodies fulfillment. Spend the “day off” by getting involved and doing for others. You may just find that you will be fulfilled as well.
